Leadership styles essay
Everyone
thinks that they have what it takes to be a good leader. Many don’t understand
the repercussions that come along with it. The purpose of this essay is to
compare and contrast the different leadership styles of Beowulf and Macbeth. Both
of them struggled with their inner selves when it came to having power. Power
changed both of them for the worst, one of them more than the other.
Beowulf always wanted to be a leader; he was a person
that everyone honored and respected because he was loyal and cared for others.
He wanted to be the best leader he could be for his people, but like any other
epic hero with power he had a terrible tragic flaw; his flaw was pride. He
wanted everyone to love him and think of him as a hero. The need to be powerful
and a renowned king loved by all consumed him so badly that he would do
anything to have his wish. The normal Beowulf would become king the right way,
but the power hungry Beowulf wanted a shortcut to the throne. He cheated his
way to the top and slept with the “devil” to gain power. Beowulf was so stuck
on becoming king he didn’t realize the monster he was being shaped into, and
soon he would become his own worst nightmare.
Macbeth is much like Beowulf; he too cheated his way to
the top. He let a prophecy and his conniving wife, Lady Macbeth get into his
head. He thought his future sounded good, but wife made it sound even better.
He wanted to have power so bad that he did anything in his power to get it, including
murder and deceit. He didn’t realize that he had a darkness inside of him that
would soon take over! After committing murderous acts to become king he was
still empty. Macbeth’s conscious haunted him every day. He went from a noble
soldier that everyone cherished, to the prince of darkness in a matter of
months. Macbeth allowed himself to be shaped into a savage, befuddled by
darkness, a lot like Beowulf.
Beowulf and Macbeth weren’t always bad. The both of them
had a lot of good qualities before they became kings; they were both heroes
that fought in wars to help their people. They loved protecting others and
everyone looked up to them. People trusted Beowulf and Macbeth with lives
because they were so honest and trust worthy. No one would’ve ever imagined
that they could become so demented and deranged. Not even Beowulf and Macbeth
themselves knew how evil they would become and what they were capable of.
Beowulf and Macbeth both started out
as good people, but they allowed themselves to be shaped into power hungry
demons. They lost sight of who they really were and in the end they both had to
face karma for all the evil they had done to gain the crowns. Too much power
can bring you down and you won’t even realize it until you’re at the
bottom. Everyone has a little darkness
inside them, the important thing is to maintain it and not allow it to take
over. Successful leaders always put their people first and do everything in
their power to protect them from bad things. Somehow they forget to protect
themselves from evil thoughts that corrupt their minds. They lose sight of the
important things that made them want to be kings in the first place
